Episode 5 of Midrising Conversations, Losing Control: When the Old Blueprint Stops Fitting, hosted by Gill Townsend and Barbara Scalzi.

Midrising Conversations · Episode 05

Sometimes losing control isn’t the crisis we fear. Sometimes it’s the moment we start seeing things more clearly.

Most of us spend years building lives designed to feel stable and predictable.

We create plans, routines, careers and identities that help us believe we know where we’re going. Then something changes. A restructure happens. A friendship ends. Parenting refuses to follow the plan. The career that once defined us no longer feels secure.

In Episode 5 of Midrising Conversations, Gill Townsend and Barbara Scalzi talk about what happens when the old blueprint stops fitting and the control we thought we had begins to slip.

About this episode

Control can make us feel safe, but much of what we call control is really preparation, routine and the belief that life will continue following the structure we’ve created.

Midlife has a way of testing that belief. The old plan may stop working, circumstances may change without our permission and the identity we’ve built around being capable and in charge can suddenly feel much less certain.

In this conversation

  • The moment Gill realised parenting comes with very little control
  • Navigating corporate restructures and job insecurity
  • Why career identity can become a crutch
  • The illusion of control in leadership and project management
  • Why everyone needs something meaningful outside their career
  • Letting go of friendships and identities that no longer fit
  • How losing control can create space for clarity and growth

When the old blueprint stops fitting

The blueprint may have been built around a secure career, a particular version of family life, long-standing friendships or the belief that being organised enough could protect you from uncertainty.

When that blueprint begins to fail, the first instinct is often to grip it more tightly. But sometimes the discomfort isn’t telling you to restore the old structure. It’s showing you that you’ve outgrown it.

This episode is for you if…

  • Something you once relied on no longer feels secure
  • Your identity has become closely tied to your job or title
  • You find uncertainty deeply uncomfortable
  • You’re trying to keep an old plan working even though your life has changed
  • You’re beginning to wonder whether losing control might also create new possibilities

The Midrising takeaway

Losing the old plan doesn’t mean you’ve lost your direction. It may mean you’re finally free to choose a better one.

Control can help us feel prepared, but it can also keep us attached to structures that no longer serve us. Letting go isn’t the same as giving up. Sometimes it’s the first honest step towards building around who you are now.

One question to take with you

What am I trying to control because I’m afraid of what might emerge without the old plan?
