Midrising Conversations · Episode 8
You can declutter your house and still feel completely overwhelmed.
Because the real clutter isn’t always sitting on a shelf, stuffed into a cupboard or waiting in a pile by the front door. Sometimes it’s the 46 open tabs in your head, the decisions you haven’t made and the list you’re somehow expected to remember without ever writing it down.
In this episode, Gill and Barbara talk about the mental load women carry and why clearing out a drawer doesn’t necessarily create the space you’re actually craving. This isn’t a tidying guide. It’s a conversation about what’s weighing you down when the clutter isn’t something you can put in a bin bag.
About this episode
There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from doing one enormous thing. It comes from remembering hundreds of tiny things all at once.
It’s knowing what’s running out, who needs an appointment, which form hasn’t been returned, what’s happening at school, what’s in the fridge and the conversation you still need to have. None of it looks especially dramatic on its own, but together it creates a constant background hum that never really switches off.
Gill and Barbara talk about the difference between physical clutter and mental clutter, why decision fatigue can leave you feeling completely depleted and what it might actually mean to put some of the weight down.
Because sometimes you don’t need another storage basket, colour-coded planner or Sunday reset routine. Sometimes you need fewer things living rent-free in your head.

This episode is for you if…
You’ve ever looked around at a reasonably tidy house and wondered why you still feel as though everything’s too much.
You’re the person who remembers the appointments, notices what needs replacing, keeps an eye on everyone’s calendar and somehow knows where the missing school hat is, even though you haven’t personally worn a school hat for several decades.
Or maybe your mind feels so crowded that even one more small decision can tip you over the edge, and you’re starting to realise the answer probably isn’t another list.
The Midrising takeaway
Not all clutter can be carried out of the house in a bin bag.
Sometimes creating space means making a decision, closing a loop, sharing the responsibility or admitting that something no longer needs to be held by you. You don’t have to organise the mental load more efficiently. Some of it needs to leave.
