Episode 3 of Midrising Conversations, It’s Not Too Late: Reinventing Yourself in Midlife, hosted by Gill Townsend and Barbara Scalzi.

Midrising Conversations · Episode 03

It isn’t too late to change direction, express more of who you are or build something that fits the person you’ve become.

Midlife comes with a lot of unhelpful messaging about what should already be settled.

Your career should be established. Your identity should be clear. Your major decisions should have been made years ago. And if you still want something different, you may quietly wonder whether you’ve missed your window.

In Episode 3 of Midrising Conversations, Gill Townsend and Barbara Scalzi explore the “it’s not too late” mindset and what meaningful change in midlife actually looks like when it isn’t driven by crisis, panic or the need to burn everything down.

About this episode

Reinvention is often presented as a dramatic before-and-after story. Leave the job. Move somewhere new. Become an entirely different person and unveil the transformation once everything looks polished.

Real change is usually less cinematic. It can mean letting go of the safest version of yourself, listening when your instincts tell you something no longer fits and taking the next step while you’re still working out where it may lead.

In this conversation

  • The difference between midlife as a label and Midrising as a decision
  • Why meaningful change doesn’t require burning your life down
  • Letting go of the safe, familiar version of yourself
  • Why your body may recognise a change before your mind can explain it
  • The fear of evolving in front of people who know the old you
  • Building something new before you feel completely ready
  • What agency and courage can look like in midlife

“It’s not too late” isn’t empty encouragement

It doesn’t mean every dream will happen exactly as you once imagined or that change comes without consequences, uncertainty or work.

It means your age doesn’t remove your agency. You’re still allowed to make new decisions, develop new ambitions and stop treating an earlier version of your life as a permanent contract.

This episode is for you if…

  • You’ve wondered whether you’ve missed your chance to change direction
  • The safe version of your life no longer feels like the right one
  • You’re waiting to feel completely ready before beginning
  • You’re afraid of changing in front of people who expect you to stay the same
  • You want to move forward without pretending your current life has been a failure

The Midrising takeaway

Midlife can be a label. Midrising is a decision.

You don’t need permission to evolve, and you don’t have to erase everything that came before. The experience, judgement and resilience you’ve built are not evidence that your story is finished. They’re part of what you take into the next chapter.

One question to take with you

What would I begin if I stopped treating my age as evidence that I’d left it too late?
